English Lecturer

About the role

The H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in the British Virgin Islands is seeking a full-time English Lecturer to teach in the Humanities and Social Sciences Department. The lecturer must be comfortable teaching a range of English courses, including English Composition I and II, Effective Business Writing, Technical Report Writing, Speech Communication, Elements of Literature, Shakespeare and Other Authors, Selected Topics I and II, Literary Theory and Advanced Literature Courses.

Key responsibilities

• Perform instructional duties in line with the College's mission, vision, policies and procedures.
• Show an innovative approach to teaching, both face-to-face and online.
• Develop engaging course syllabi aligned with current trends and expectations.
• Teach five courses (15-17 credit hours) per semester, day, evening, weekend and/or online, possibly at more than one location.
• Serve as an academic advisor to students.
• Engage with external institutions and the wider community to support research, teaching and the campus strategy.
• Help market the Department's programmes and recruit students.
• Take part in Department or College committees.

Required profile

• An earned doctorate in a relevant discipline from an accredited institution, with at least four years of teaching or academic experience and evidence of continuing scholarship.
• Or a master's degree or equivalent with seven years of successful teaching or academic experience as a Lecturer and evidence of continuing scholarship.
• Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, and the ability to work in a team with other faculty.

Required skills

• Clear verbal and written communication and mentoring of students.
• Familiarity with educational technology and digital tools, and the ability to teach in person and virtually.
• Collaborative leadership and advocacy.

What we offer

• Salary of $55,438.33 (USD), with the first $10,000 tax-exempted and 8% tax thereafter.
• 8% gratuity on successful completion of the contract.
